COEX, Bongeunsa and Apgujeong: A Day in Modern Seoul
Two compact clusters with one deliberate transfer between them.
By A Drop of Seoul Editorial ·

“Gangnam” is too large to be a walking itinerary. COEX and Bongeunsa form one excellent pair; Apgujeong and Cheongdam form another. The day works only when the transfer between them is treated as transport, not a charming stroll.
Quick answer
Begin at Bongeunsa Station, visit the temple, cross to COEX, have lunch, then use subway or taxi to reach the Apgujeong/cheongdam area selected for your bookings. Allow a full day.
| At a glance | Our recommendation |
|---|---|
| Best for | Modern architecture, shopping, beauty appointments and a rainy-day option |
| Time needed | 7–9 hours |
| Start / finish | Bongeunsa Station / Apgujeong Rodeo or selected booking |
| Walking | 4–6 km plus one subway or taxi transfer |
| Best day | Match the day to exhibitions and appointments |
| Key planning rule | COEX and Bongeunsa are one cluster; Apgujeong is another |
Morning: Bongeunsa
The contrast between a Buddhist temple and the convention-and-retail district across the road is more than a photo. This is an active religious site. Keep voices low, follow signs, and check whether ceremonies limit access to a space.
Midday: COEX and Starfield Library
The library is a public visual anchor inside a very large mall, not a reason to photograph people reading at close range. Give it a short visit, then use COEX for weatherproof lunch, shopping or an exhibition you have intentionally chosen.
Afternoon: make one south-side choice
Transfer to Apgujeong Rodeo and Cheongdam for fashion, beauty appointments and architecture, or to Sinsa for a more casual retail afternoon. Garosugil has changed repeatedly; do not describe it as a timeless row of independent boutiques. Verify the current businesses that justify the detour.
What we would skip
Gangnam Station itself is not automatically part of this day. Adding it because of the song or district name creates another transfer without a clear reward. Likewise, do not walk from COEX to Apgujeong unless the walk itself is the project.
A realistic transfer
COEX connects directly with Samseong Station on Line 2 and Bongeunsa Station on Line 9. Apgujeong Rodeo Station is on the Suin–Bundang Line. The best route depends on the exact shop or appointment, and a taxi can be rational for two people when transfers are awkward. Check current traffic before assuming it is faster.

If beauty appointments are the point, begin with A Beauty Lover's Day in Gangnam. For a quieter design afternoon north of the river, use A Local's Afternoon in Hannam. For wet weather, compare Seoul on a Rainy Day.
FAQ
Can I visit Bongeunsa and COEX together?
Yes. Bongeunsa sits directly across from the COEX area, and both are served by Bongeunsa Station. This is one of Seoul's most practical historic-and-modern pairings.
Is Starfield Library free?
Yes. Visit Seoul lists Starfield Library as a free public space inside COEX Mall. Events and operating conditions can change, so check the current schedule.
Is Apgujeong walkable from COEX?
It is not a sensible sightseeing walk for most visitors. Treat Apgujeong as a second cluster reached by subway or taxi, then walk locally around the specific Rodeo, Dosan or Cheongdam area you selected.
Are Gangnam, COEX and Apgujeong the same area?
They are all south of the Han River and commonly grouped under “Gangnam,” but they are not one compact neighborhood. Gangnam Station, COEX/Samseong and Apgujeong/cheongdam require separate transport decisions.
How long do I need at Starfield Library?
Fifteen to forty-five minutes is enough for most visitors unless attending an event or actually reading. COEX becomes a longer stop when combined with lunch, shopping, an exhibition or the aquarium.
