What it is
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid with a small molecular size. It is one of the more powerful cosmetic exfoliating acids and appears in toners, peels, masks, and resurfacing products.
What it does
It helps lift dead skin from the surface, making skin look brighter and feel smoother. It can also support the appearance of more even tone over time, but the tradeoff is higher irritation potential.
How to use it
Use at night, sparingly, and avoid layering with retinol or other acids at first. A soothing moisturizer and daily sunscreen are non-negotiable.
Good to know
More likely to sting than gentler acids. Sensitive, dry, or barrier-damaged skin should start low and use sunscreen carefully.
