What it is
Squalane is a stable, lightweight emollient related to squalene, a lipid found in human sebum. Modern cosmetic squalane is typically plant-derived and used in oils, creams, and softening serums.
What it does
It smooths the skin surface, reduces the feeling of dryness, and helps a moisturizer feel more flexible without becoming heavy. It is a nice bridge between watery hydration and richer oils.
How to use it
Use a few drops after serum or choose a moisturizer that already includes it. It works well at night, in winter, or anytime your barrier feels dry but you do not want a thick cream.
Good to know
Generally non-irritating, but very oily skin may prefer small amounts or formulas where squalane is blended into a gel cream.
